The Arabic alphabet: 28 letters and their forms

Arabic is written right to left and most letters join the next one, so each letter has up to four shapes. Six letters (ا د ذ ر ز و) never join the letter after them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type Arabic on my computer without an Arabic keyboard?

Open this page and choose Arabic layout: your normal keyboard now types Arabic letters. Each key shows the Latin letter it sits on, so you do not need stickers. You can also click the on-screen keys or switch to Phonetic mode and type the words as they sound.

How do I write Arabic with harakat (vowel marks)?

Type a letter, then add its mark. On the keyboard, press Shift and the key for the mark (Shift+Q fatha, Shift+E damma, Shift+A kasra, Shift+X sukun, Shift+` shadda), or use the Harakat tab under the keyboard. Tools → Remove harakat strips them again.

Can I type Arabic phonetically, like salam → سلام?

Yes. Choose Phonetic mode and type in Latin letters. Suggestions appear above the keyboard; press Space to accept the first one, use the arrow keys to pick another, or Esc to keep your Latin text. Arabizi numbers work: 3 = ع, 7 = ح, 5 = خ, 9 = ق, 2 = ء.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The keyboard adapts to small screens and, in Arabic layout mode, replaces your phone keyboard so it does not cover the page. Turn on “Use my device keyboard” in settings if you prefer your phone’s own keyboard.

How do I copy the Arabic text into Word, WhatsApp or an email?

Click Copy (or the copy key on the keyboard), then paste into any app with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac). You can also save the text as a .txt file or send it directly to WhatsApp, Telegram, X or email.

Can I type Arabic with my voice?

Yes, in Chrome, Edge and Safari. Click Dictate, allow the microphone and speak. Pick your dialect in settings (Saudi, Egyptian, Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Lebanese and more).

Is the text I type private?

Your text stays in your browser and is saved only on this device. The only thing sent anywhere is the Latin word you type in phonetic mode, and only while smart suggestions are on; switch them off in settings to work fully offline.

What is the difference between Arabic-Indic and Western numbers?

Arabic text uses either Western digits (0123456789, common in the Maghreb) or Arabic-Indic digits (٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩, common in the Middle East). Choose either in settings, switch with the ١٢٣ key, or convert existing text from the Tools menu.

Can I use it for Persian, Urdu or Maghrebi Arabic?

Yes. The “Persian, Urdu, Maghrebi” tab adds letters such as پ چ ژ گ ڤ ڨ ڭ ک ی ے, so you can type Farsi, Urdu, Kurdish words or Maghrebi names.

How do I install an Arabic keyboard on Windows or Mac permanently?

Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language & region → Add a language → Arabic. Mac: System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → + → Arabic. Use this page to learn the layout first: it is the same Arabic 101 layout.
